Apple's 27" Thunderbolt display does this kind of thing as well. I've used Thunderbolt in Lubuntu (for an eSATA + USB 3.0 adapter) and it worked out of the box.Īlso, if you ever decide to use your laptop as a desktop when at home but still a laptop on the go, there are Thunderbolt docks that let you connect to a monitor, 3 or 4 USB, and Ethernet with just a single Thunderbolt cable to plug and unplug. You can buy it at an Apple Store for $30 or for $25/$28 on Amazon. Apple sells a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter. To find it, look for a Mini DisplayPort port labeled with a bolt of lightning. Thunderbolt also supports daisy chaining.

Your Mac has Thunderbolt though, right? Thunderbolt serves two purposes: (1) DisplayPort for connecting external monitors and (2) 10 or 20 Gbps PCIe for expansion similar to a tower but external. Remember that most computer cables only cost companies a few cents to manufacture, so don't get ripped off.Īh, I see. Digital cables will either work or they won't, so don't buy expensive marketing nonsense like Monster Cable. Ethernet is less convenient than WiFi, but it's faster and more reliable.

Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6 can all do gigabit. Monoprice will give you more choice on length (long cables that are still very cheap), but you have to pay shipping and don't get instant gratification. If you don't have any extra Ethernet cables lying around, buy several from either or the nearest dollar store, because they'll have them for cheap and you never know when an Ethernet cable might come in handy. I mostly use Linux Mint, which is similar but slightly different, so I don't remember the exact spot and name in Lubuntu off the top of my head. It's in the bottom left menu, under Preferences or Administration or something like that.

Once you've plugged your machine into the router, you'll be able to use the built-in Driver Manager (or whatever Lubuntu calls it) to very easily download and install whatever driver or firmware is required to use your WiFi adapter. If on the other hand you haven't tried Ethernet yet, do so. When you say the network adapter doesn't work, do you mean even Ethernet somehow doesn't work? As a computer technician, I've used Linux distros (usually Ubuntu-based) on many machines and Ethernet has always worked out of the box.
